If you have ever sourced cashews commercially, you have encountered the code W320. It appears on more export invoices than any other cashew designation in the world. But what does it actually mean — and why has it become the global standard?

What W320 Means

The "W" stands for White Whole — a full, unbroken kernel with no splits, pieces, or blemishes. The number "320" indicates that there are approximately 320 whole kernels per pound (454 grams). This translates to a kernel weight of roughly 1.4 grams each — a medium-large size that is visually appealing, substantial enough to feel premium, and small enough to be versatile.

"W320 is the Goldilocks of cashew grades. Large enough to look premium in a mix, small enough to coat evenly in a masala, priced accessibly enough for scale. That is why it dominates global trade."

The Full Grading System

Cashew grades are standardized by the Cashew Export Promotion Council of India (CEPCI) and recognized globally. The main white whole grades are:

Why W320 Dominates Global Trade

W320 accounts for roughly 35–40% of all cashew exports from India. The reasons are structural. It sits at the intersection of three buyer priorities: visual appeal, versatility, and price efficiency. A W320 kernel is large enough to be the hero ingredient in a premium trail mix or a restaurant appetizer. But it is also small enough to coat in seasoning evenly, to fold into a chocolate without creating a size imbalance, and to roast consistently.

Is W320 the Right Grade for You?

Not always. The right grade depends entirely on application. For gifting and premium retail, W180 or W240 are the prestige choices. For bulk cooking and institutional supply, W450 and W500 are more cost-efficient. W320 is optimal when you need a single grade that covers multiple applications — which is why importers who supply multiple food categories almost always anchor on W320.
